Auditing excel spreadsheets improves the integrity of the calculations and data in workbooks. In this webinar, you will learn techniques to verify the integrity of even the most complicated Excel workbooks using formula auditing and error-checking tools. Upon completion of the course, you will be able to:
  • Learn techniques for accessing password-protected workbooks.
  • Identify how to go behind the scenes in a workbook to check for worksheets that can't be viewed or hidden from Excel's primary user interface.
  • Find and select all formulas within a worksheet with just a couple of mouse clicks.
  • Use the Watch Window to easily monitor the ramifications of even minor changes to your workbooks.
  • Describe how range names can minimize errors, save time in Excel, serve as navigation aids, and store information in hidden locations.
  • Audit all named cells in a workbook with ease by way of the INDIRECT function in all versions of Excel and the FORMULATEXT function in Excel 2013 and later.
  • Move through formulas in slow motion with the Evaluate Formula feature.
  • Track down the ripple effect of errors in spreadsheets with Excel's Trace Error command.
  • Use the N function to annotate formulas within the formula bar when a cell comment won't suffice.
  • Print a list of all cell comments on a worksheet or print visible comments.
  • Verify that a pivot table is actually referencing all the data you're expecting to be summarized.

In this informative webcast, Excel expert David Ringstrom, CPA, shares a variety of tricks and techniques you can use to improve the integrity of your Excel spreadsheets. You'll also discover techniques for auditing spreadsheets created by others. David thoroughly covers and explains the uses of several Excel features, including the Hide and Protect feature, the Conditional Formatting feature, the Table feature, the Data Validation feature, and the Custom Views feature. In addition, he compares and contrasts the IFNA, IFERROR, and ISERROR functions and shares a simple design technique that will improve the integrity of Excel's SUM function. David demonstrates techniques by using the version of Excel in use by the majority of attendees for this presentation. Typically, this means he teaches from Excel 2010 or 2013, but his handouts identify differences in Excel 2007, 2010, 2013, and 2016 when needed. His webcasts are fast-paced, and attendees often are surprised at the amount of ground he covers in a session. He welcomes participants' questions, so come ready to pick his brain. David's detailed handouts, with numbered steps, serve as reference material you can utilize going forward. He also provides an Excel workbook that includes a majority of the examples he uses to demonstrate techniques during the presentation.

  • Create an in-cell list by way of Excel's Data Validation feature.

  • Learn a simple design technique that greatly improves the integrity of Excel's SUM function.
  • Learn design techniques that minimize errors.
  • Learn how range names can minimize errors, save time in Excel, serve as navigation aids, and store information in hidden locations.
  • Learn the risks of linked workbooks, determine if a workbook contains links, and see how links can hide within Excel features.
  • Make it harder for a user to circumvent data validation and easy for you to identify when someone has attempted to do so.
  • Minimize ongoing spreadsheet maintenance with Excel's Table feature.
  • Preserve key formulas using hide and protect features.
  • Switch between Custom Views by way of a hidden drop-down list you can enable on Excel's Quick Access Toolbar.
  • Toggle the Locked status of a worksheet cell on or off by way of a custom shortcut.
  • Use Conditional Formatting to color-code your data, identify duplicates, and apply icons.
  • Use Conditional Formatting to identify unlocked cells into which data can be entered.
  • Use Excel's Custom Views feature to make a single set of data serve multiple purposes.
  • Utilize Data Validation to limit percentages entered in a cell to a specific range of values.
